A good crowd watched the annual Athens Bonfire on
Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012. The bonfire devoured
discarded Christmas trees, gathered and collected by township
volunteers. The event started in 1984
at Centennial Park in Athens. Photo: Matt Flikweert Bonfire lights up the night By Matt Flikweert Led by retired Athens Councillor Keith “Rocky” Gray, and a group of volunteers, members of the Athens and District Snowmobile Club and the Athens Fire Department organized another Christmas tree bonfire in Centennial Park in Athens here on January 7, 2012. The bonfire was the 28th annual bonfire; a tradition started by the Athens and District Snowmobile Club in 1984. Spectators gathered in the park for the traditional mid winter bonfire event in the park at Centre 76. Free public skating preceded the bonfire. Waiting for Snowmobile Club members to light the fire, many took advantage of the free wagon rides offered by John Male while others stood and talked, enjoying a delicious cup of hot chocolate served by township volunteers. Members of the Athens Snowmobile Club lit their hand held torches, circled the trees and started the fire. Helped by the wind, it took just seconds for the flames to shoot up and become a roaring blaze. Strong winds blew smoke and sparks from the fire all over but nothing happened and everyone greatly enjoyed the spectacle of a very bright fire that lit up the whole park. Firefighters kept a watchful eye and spectators all stayed out of the wind that blew harder than in previous years. Organizers collected trees from Athens, Brockville, Greenbush and other places. They kept a close eye on all that happened. Volunteers included Chris Gray, Dennis Rhoden, Tom Casey, Orley Brundige, Justin Brundige, Nathan Slack, and Sean Slack.
While cross country trails generally haven’t been the
greatest so far this season, skiers enjoyed a beautiful winter day on the

rescheduled
By Matt Flikweert Open House Activities at the Triangle Cross Country Ski Club so far this year included an Open House on January 22 at the clubhouse on 114 Marsh Road. The club invited everyone to “Bring your skis or snowshoes and take a tour of the West Trails or try out the separate three-loop picturesque snowshoe trail.” A bonfire at the Trailhead (in the parking lot) enabled visitors and members to roast a hot dog and enjoy a refreshing cup of cider or hot chocolate. Visitors and members could also register for Jackrabbit lessons and ski club memberships. Loppet and Tour Originally scheduled for February 5, the Triangle Cross Country Ski Club Annual Loppet and Tour has been postponed to Saturday February 11. Registration is at 12 noon and Loppet start time is at 1 pm. The registration form includes a two-page waiver to be completed by non-club member entrants. Kids’ events start at 11 am and they should register at 10. Soup and cider will be available for Loppet and Tour competitors in the clubhouse.
